KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION AND SCREENING
If your child is eligible for kindergarten this coming school year, we will begin taking registrations January 26th through March 2nd, during regular school days (8AM-3PM) . Your child must be 5 years old by September 30th, 2015 to register. You will need to bring your child’s social security number, immunization record, and birth certificate. If there is a custody agreement, we will also need a copy of that. Kindergarten Screening will be held on March 25th from 8:30-5. Your child must be registered to sign up for screening. If you have any questions, please call the school office (419-659-2103) and we will be happy to help you.
WHY 5 DAY KINDERGARTEN?
Our School Advisory Council has been studying moving to 5 full days of kindergarten since it was discussed at the state level a few years ago. We have seriously considered it for the last 2 years for a variety of reasons. We began looking at numerous studies, many compare 1/2 day to full day. (We could find no studies of 4 day kindergarten compared to 5 day.) We believe those same strengths apply to 5 days vs 4 days.
We surveyed 13 area schools including the other 2 Putnam County Catholic Schools. Both Catholic Schools do 5 full days of Kindergarten. Of the 11 public schools we surveyed, 7 do 5 full days, 2 do 4 full days (CG & PG), and 2 do 1/2 days.
We are finding that our students are coming to us with more needs than ever before mainly because of the step up in curriculum. Another day helps us meet those needs more effectively. Yes, some students are not developmentally ready and that's one reason why we screen students entering kindergarten. We assess students along the way so we can be sure we are meeting their needs and help them reach their full potential.
We believe having a day off in the middle week extends the period for those students experiencing separation issues.
We will re-evaluate our kindergarten program at the end of next school year. We will want to make sure it is what is best for our students. Right now, we think the 5 day program will be more beneficial to our students.
